The highly anticipated return of former The Everest champion Giga Kick headlines Saturday’s Group 1 $1 million The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville, the grand finale of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.

Trained by Clayton Douglas, the five-year-old son of Scissor Kick is the clear $2.20 favourite at Ladbrokes as he embarks on his latest campaign.

Giga Kick, renowned for his stunning victory in the world’s richest turf race as a three-year-old, hasn’t raced since his midfield finish in the Group 1 VRC Champions Sprint at Flemington last November.

While his last win was in the 2023 Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane, punters remain confident in his ability to perform first-up, with Mark Zahra booked for the ride.

The second favourite at $6 is the progressive three-year-old colt Reserve Bank from the in-form Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr stable.

The son of Capitalist is chasing a hat-trick and will be ridden by Jamie Melham, who steered last year’s winner Benedetta to victory.

Reserve Bank is aiming to become the first colt to win The Goodwood since Perfectly Ready in 2006. Interestingly, only two other three-year-olds (fillies Lone Rock in 2011 and Royal Merchant in 2023) have won the race since then.

Reserve Bank boasts an unblemished record at Morphettville, having won the Listed Redelva Stakes before his last-start victory in the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes over 1200m on April 26th, where he carried 57.5kg. He has drawn well in barrier nine and drops to 54.5kg for this Group 1 test.

Two other contenders are currently priced under $10: Ameena ($8.50) and Charm Stone ($9.50), trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman and Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr respectively.

These two finished second and first in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes over the same track and distance last time out.

Tassort filly Ameena was narrowly beaten in that fillies and mares’ feature and is expected to improve second-up, boasting a strong record at this stage of her preparation (two wins and a placing from three second-up runs).

She also benefits from a weight drop and the booking of Dean Yendall.

Charm Stone, also from the Price/Kent yard, caused a minor upset when winning the Robert Sangster first-up and is now aiming to complete the double, a feat last achieved by Platelet in 2013.

While Zahra rode her to victory last start, Ben Melham, a three-time previous winner of The Goodwood, takes the reins for her second-up assignment.

The 2025 The Goodwood is scheduled as Race 8 on the nine-race card at Morphettville on Saturday, with a local starting time of 4:00pm (ACST) or 4:30pm (AEST).
