Tashi Breaks Through in Thrilling Tattersall’s Tiara Triumph

Peter Snowden‘s talented mare Tashi shed her bridesmaid tag in spectacular fashion at Eagle Farm on Saturday, unleashing a powerful finishing burst to claim an impressive two-length victory in the 2025 Tattersall’s Tiara and end a frustrating sequence of second-place finishes.

The five-year-old daughter of Sebring arrived at the season’s final elite-level race, Brisbane’s Group 1 $700,000 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), having placed runner-up in her preceding three starts, including a narrow half-length defeat to Floozie in the traditional Tiara lead-up, the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1200m), on the same track just two weeks prior on June 14.

Today, stepping up to the 1400m, Tashi expertly turned the tables, aided by a perfectly timed ride from Irish hoop Tom Sherry, who celebrated his inaugural Group 1 triumph.

“She’s always had the talent, but today she showed the grit,” a beaming Snowden told the media post-win.

“We’ve been knocking on the door with her all prep, and to see her breakthrough in a Group 1 like this is incredibly satisfying.

“Tom gave her a peach of a ride. He timed it perfectly and gave her every chance. It’s a great result for the whole team.”

The victory marked Tashi’s first Black-Type success, adding significant merit to a performance that also secured 50-time Group 1 winning trainer Peter Snowden his second Tatt’s Tiara trophy, following his 2017 success with Tycoon Tara (in partnership with son Paul).

Dane Ripper winner Floozie set the pace, leading the Tiara field into the straight in pursuit of the coveted double, but she ultimately peaked too early, fading to cross the line in fifth.

Tashi, meanwhile, unleashed a colossal late run with 200m to travel, hitting the lead a furlong from home and extending her advantage to finish 1.94 lengths clear.

The brave, locally trained Abounding ($19), a four-year-old by Rich Enuff, put in an enormous closing effort for trainer Robert Heathcote to claim a valiant second.

Rounding out the trifecta at a generous price was master trainer Chris Waller‘s Olentia ($31), who had been largely overlooked in the markets after her tenth-place finish in the Dane Ripper.

Bred and raced by Corumbene Stud, the Tattersall’s Tiara-winning Tashi now boasts five wins from 26 career starts, with her total earnings soaring past the $1 million mark.

Following this breakthrough Group 1 success, Snowden indicated Tashi is likely to be spelled before being aimed at the lucrative Sydney Spring Carnival.

The Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in September is a traditional kick-off for mares returning from winter campaigns, while the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) later that month, also at Rosehill, shapes up as the logical progression given her commanding Tiara win over the same distance.

Looking further ahead to Melbourne, Snowden hinted at a potential shot at the Group 1 $1 million Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on VRC Derby Day, Saturday, November 1st.

“She’s earned a crack at the mile now. If she comes back well, the Empire Rose is a race that suits her profile perfectly,” he concluded.
