Maribyrnong Plate

The 2017 Maribyrnong Plate is a Group 3 race that takes place at Flemington Racecourse in November each year. Run over a distance of 1,000 metres, the Maribyrnong Plate is run as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Maribyrnong Plate is run under set weight conditions, open to two-year-old horses only, and is worth $150,000 in prize money.

The Maribyrnong Plate was first run in 1871 when it was won by a horse called Argus Scandal. The race was originally held over a distance of five furlongs (1,000 metres), however, was run over 1,200 metres for one year in 1994 and 1,100 metres in 1995. Prior to 2005, the Maribyrnong Plate was actually a Group 2 race.

The Maribyrnong Plate is held on Emirates Stakes Day, which marks the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The race shares its day with the Group 1 Emirates Stakes, Group 1 Darley Classic, Group 2 Matriarch Stakes and Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

As a two year old event, there aren’t a lot of leadup races to look to for form. Some fillies might come via the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes at the same track a few days before on Melbourne Cup Day.

Following their Maribyrnong Plate run, young two year olds might choose to contest the listed Merson Cooper Stakes at Sandown Racecourse.

Notable winners of the Maribyrnong Plate include Heroic (1923), Biscay (1967), Vain (1968), Baguette (1969), Canny Lad (1989), Testa Rossa (1998), Bel Esprit (2001), Nadeem (2005), Exceedingly Good (2007) and Artic Command (2010).
