Winning Rupert going for 4 straight in Gold Edition Plate

Unbeaten colt Winning Rupert is going for four straight victories when he lines up in the Listed $100,000 Delfina’s Bistro Gold Edition Plate (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker admits that he is starting to feel the pressure with Winning Rupert who will be sent out as an odds on favourite again this weekend after resuming from a spell for a first up five and three quarter lengths win as the short price of $1.50 in a 1200m three year old Plate at Eagle Farm on December 3.

“He’s going for his fourth win in a row at short odds at his fourth run so I can’t imagine how Peter Moody felt,” Baker told racing.com.

Baker was referring to retired trainer Peter Moody who saddled up his super star mare Black Caviar for twenty-five race appearances for twenty-five wins.

Ladbrokes.com.au have installed Winning Rupert as the $1.14 favourite for the Gold Edition Plate and Baker said that if everything goes to plan the Written Tycoon colt will be winning again.

“He’s exciting but you don’t get carried away,” Baker said.

“All things being equal you would expect him to win but it’s a funny game racing, there’s one or two unexposed horses in the race and I see there’s a South Australian horse so you never get carried away.”

Leading Brisbane jockey Jeff Lloyd is booked to ride again after being aboard Winning Rupert for all his three wins to date and reported that the colt was in good order after partnering him in a gallop on Tuesday morning.

“He’s in great condition,” Baker said.

“Jeff Lloyd sat on him on Tuesday morning and he’s very happy with him. He’s got a lot of belief in the horse and he’s in the best position to judge and he is a good judge.”

Another convincing win will see Winning Rupert remain at the top of the market order for the $2m Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 14.

Winning Rupert is currently the $3.20 favourite just ahead of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained dual Group 1 winning filly Global Glamour at $4.20 with Darren Weir’s Speedeor at $8.

Winning Rupert has drawn nicely at barrier four and is completely dominating the betting for the Gold Edition Plate with the nearest runner closet to him in the market order being the Adelaide filly Gold Denari at $13 just ahead of David Vandyke trained first starter Deep Image at $15.

Gold Denari has drawn barrier five with James Orman to ride while Deep Image will jump from gate eight with Michael Cahill in the saddle.
