A potential sprinting champion emerged on Derby Day as the electric Tentyris annihilated the field in the 2025 Coolmore Stud Stakes, cruising to an effortless victory and handing the red-hot Mark Zahra his third win of the afternoon.

The $2 million Group 1 feature down the famous Flemington ‘Straight Six’ saw the heavily backed colt, trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman, elevate his form to elite levels.
Coming off an impressive Listed Gothic Stakes triumph, the son of Street Boss showed breathtaking acceleration to prove far too good for his classy rivals over the 1200m.
Freedman’s Faith Rewarded
For co-trainer Anthony Freedman, the win was a fitting reward for the team’s persistence throughout the spring.
Tentyris was a horse the stable had always held in high regard, and his peak performance validated their confidence.
Speaking trackside after the victory, Freedman paid tribute to his son and the stable staff.
“I came today, really only to support Sam,” he told Racing.com.
“He’s been here all spring, and we really haven’t had, what you would call, a great spring.
“This was the horse we had so much faith in and he prepared him perfectly.
“I just wanted to be here and sit in the background and say well done.
“Credit to the horse, Godolphin, obviously great supporters and our staff have done a great job.”
Zahra’s Expert Ride Seals the Deal
Zahra, fresh off earlier success with Getta Good Feeling and Warnie, produced yet another textbook ride.
Tentyris settled off the pace, but when a gap emerged with 200m to run, the colt exploded through.
He hit the lead and raced away for an emphatic 2.25 length romp in the sprint championship.
The winning hoop praised the colt’s raw ability and turn of foot.
“Anthony said don’t panic, just trust the horse,” Zahra said.
“He was right and I just trusted the horse. I got on the back of Beiweicht and that other Snowden horse (Racing Force).
“The way he improves each start and the further the race went, the more he came up underneath me.
“He let rip when I first let go and then he thought ‘where am I’ and he started to stargaze.
“He’s a very good colt and what a win”
Running on for a distant second was John McArdle’s grey filly My Gladiola, who was game in defeat, while Legacy Bound finished strongly to secure third and complete the Coolmore Stud Stakes trifecta.
Runner-up jockey Jamie Mott was gracious about the result.
“Really proud of her,” Mott said.
“Obviously disappointed not to win. Super proud of her and she’s run a really good race.
“The winner was just too sharp when he showed his acceleration, but she was really strong late and couldn’t be more proud of her.”
The win marked Zahra’s first in the event since his success aboard Merchant Navy back in 2017.
Stakes Day Target?
Following the stunning result, attention immediately turned to the possibility of a quick seven-day back-up for the Group 1 $3 million Champions Sprint (1200m) on Stakes Day at the same track and trip.
Tentyris’s dominant performance has seen him firm dramatically in futures markets.
Freedman confirmed the option is firmly on the table.
“We’ll see, we’ll definitely look into it,” he said.
“We’ve said that from day dot. If he has a good three-or-four days, there’s no reason why he will not turn up next week.
“I think he’s very good. Today was dominant, he didn’t have all the favours but when produced showed an electric turn of foot.
“We may run next Saturday, we’ll see how he does, but he’s a very big tough colt.”
Following the Coolmore Stud Stakes results, Tentyris has rocketed in the all-in 2025 Champions Sprint betting at Ladbrokes, shortening from $15 right into $4.00.
History is against him, however, as no three-year-old has managed to win the Champions Sprint since Pharein achieved the feat way back in 1999.
