The 2017 Underwood Stakes is a Group 1 race that is held on the first day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival each year.
Run over a stayer’s distance of 1,800 metres, the Underwood Stakes takes place at Caulfield Racecourse and is worth $500,000 in prize money.
Run under weight-for-age conditions, the Underwood Stakes is run annually in September on the same day as the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. The Underwood Stakes is open only to horses aged three years and older.
The Underwood Stakes is often used as a lead up race for horses that will be looking for longer distances of 2,000 metres or 2,400 metres during the rest of the spring carnival. The race is a reasonable guide for the upcoming Group 1 Caulfield Cup and the Group 1 Cox Plate. So You Think went on to win the Cox Plate after winning the Underwood Stakes in 2010, as did El Segundo (2006). Both Mummify (2003) and Elvstroem (2004) won the Underwood Stakes before claiming victory in the Caulfield Cup later that year.
The Underwood Stakes was first held in 1924 when it was won by Whittier. The race was first held at Werribee Racecourse before moving to its current home at Caulfield in 1948. The Underwood Stakes began as an eight furlong (1600m) race, with the distance changing five times until it was made an 1,800 metre race in 1994. The race was run twice in 1944 when it was won by both Tea Cake and Amana.
