The 2017 Lord Mayors Cup is a Group 3 race that takes place at Doomben racecourse in May each year. Run over a distance of 1,600 metres, the Lord Mayors Cup is run as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. The Lord Mayors Cup is run under weight-for-age conditions and is worth $125,000 in prize money.
The race is extremely popular amongst local horses that have succeeded throughout the year at city grade. The Chairman’s Handicap is often a good guide to how a horse may perform in the Lord Mayors Cup. Those horses that run well in the Lord Mayors Cup may choose to go on to races such as the Group 2 Queensland Guineas for three-year-olds or the Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes.
The Lord Mayors Cup is held on Doomben 10,000 Day and shares its day with the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes, Group 3 Premier’s Cup, Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes, Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes and Listed Chief De Beers Quality. The 1996 and 1997 editions of the Lord Mayors Cup were cancelled due to heavy rain.
