The 2017 Grand Prix Stakes is a Group 3 race held during the Brisbane Winter Carnival will return to Eagle Farm in 2017 after being run at Doomben Racecourse in Queensland ssince 2010. It is a middle distance contest and run over a trip of 2200m under set weight conditions.
The race carries a price tag of $150,000 and is specifically for three year olds.
The Grand Prix Stakes is now run on the same race card as the Group 1 $700,000 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m), one of the biggest days the venue has every year.
The race is building a long history and has provided plenty of highlights since inauguration in 1974.
It’s the direct lead up event for horses tackling the Queensland Derby which is run over 2400m at Eagle Farm later in the carnival.
Despite being the perfect tune up before that race only half Hennessy in 2003 and Ice Chariot in 2006 have completed the double in the last decade.
That said Kutchinsky came close when running second after winning this race in 2010.
Many horses will travel up from Sydney and Melbourne for the Grand Prix Stakes as well as a huge contingent of horses form across South East Queensland.
Previous winners include Conair in 1999, Distinctly Secret in 2002, Sirmione in 2007 and Turnitup in 2011.
