The 2018 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes is a Group 2 event run during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Moonee Valley Racecourse in September. It is a mile race (1600m) with a cool half a million dollars up for grabs for the best of the weight-for-age contenders.
From 1984 up until 2004 the event was called the John F. Feehan Stakes. In 2005 though the name was changed to the Dato Tan Chin Stakes to honour the owner of some of Australia’s best ever racehorses. In 2009 the event received another makeover with the prize money bumped up from $350,000 to $500,000.
The quality of horses competing in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes has continued to increase with many going on to become true champions. In line with this, the race has grown in importance as reflected by the big jump in prize money.
Horses to win this event have gone on to claim such races as the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winners list reads like a who’s who of Australian thoroughbred racing.
Mannerism was 1991 champion even before the race took on its current level of significance.
More recently there has been Sunline in 2000, Northerly in 2001 and Fields Of Omagh in 2003.
Back to back wins for Lad Of The Manor in 2005 / 2006 and more back to back wins in 2009 / 2010 with Whobegotyou.
It’s a testament to the quality of the event when you see legends such as Apache Cat (2006), Typhoon Tracy (2010) and even triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva (2004 / 2005) finishing in second place.
