Darwin Cup

The 2018 Darwin Cup is an event held annually at Darwin Racecourse in Fannie Bay, Darwin. Off the track Darwin’s racing carnival culminates on Darwin Cup Day, where a public holiday sees the locals getting in and around the on-track action and off-track hospitality. The weekend sees the largest influx of people to the Top End with an estimated crowd of 20,000 in attendance.

Unlike the hallowed turf of Flemington, Royal Randwick and the headline courses in Australia’s major racing states, Fannie Bay Racecourse is a dirt track and makes for an entirely unique racing experience for runners, jockeys, trainers and racing fans alike.

The Darwin Cup field is set at a capacity of twelve horses and boasts an impressive $200,000 prize pool, including the lucrative $132,000 winner’s check.

Some of Australian racing’s finest are drawn to the Darwin Cup each year. Current Sydney Premiership-winning jockey Hugh Bowman partnered Lightinthenite to a dominant win in the Darwin Cup in 2015.
