The 2017 Craven Plate is a Group 3 race held at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney during the spring racing carnival.

The Craven Plate is held under weight for age conditions and worth $500,000 in prize money. The distance of the event is 2000m and it falls on the biggest day of the Sydney Spring Carnival.

The Craven Plate is raced on the Epsom Handicap Day card, a program that includes the Group 1 Flight Stakes, Group 1 Metropolitan and obviously the Group 1 Epsom Handicap. Other group events held on the day include the Group 2 Premiere Stakes and Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes.

It is the final event of the Sydney spring raced under weight for age conditions and provides a level just below the headline events on the same day.

Lead in races can include the likes of the Group 2 Hill Stakes, Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes or even the Group 1 George Main Stakes.

There are some fantastic horses on the Craven Plate winners list and you can tell it probably takes a horse a bit better than Group 3 level to triumph.

Yippyio won it in 1997 before returning three years later to do it again in 2000.

Tie The Knot won it in 1999 and Mummify got up in 2005.

Recently C’est Le Guerre won in 2010 with My Kingdom Of Fife winning in 2011.
