The 2016 Caulfield Classic, until 2014 known as the Norman Robinson Stakes, is a Group 3 race that takes place at Caulfield racecourse in October each year. Run over a distance of 2,000 metres, the Ladbrokes Caulfield Classic is run as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
The 2016 Ladbrokes Classic will be run on October 15th, 2016 at Caulfield Racecourse, VIC.
The race, which is open to three-year-olds only, is run under set-weight conditions and is worth $500,000 in prize money. There is an additional prize of $250,000 to any horse that can complete a double with either the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas or the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.
The Caulfield Classic was first run in 1978 when it was won by a horse named Society Beau. The race was originally run as a Listed race until it was given Group 3 status in 1998. The Caulfield Classic was run as a Group 2 from 2000-2004 until it was downgraded once again to a Group 3 in 2005. Throughout the years the Caulfield Classic has been known under many different names, including the Wallace Stakes, the Steeves Lumley Stakes, and until 2014 the Norman Robinson Stakes.
The Ladbrokes Caulfield Classic takes place on Caulfield Cup Day and shares its program with the Group 1 Caulfield Cup, Group 2 Caulfield Sprint, group 2 Tristarc Stakes, Group 3 David Jones Cup and Group 3 Moonga Stakes.
Notable winners of the Caulfield Classic include Attack (1979), Gold Deck (1984), Nothin’ Leica Dane (1995), Blackfriars (1999), Shamoline Warrior (2009), Retrieve (2010) and Sabrage (2011).
