Perth trainer Gino Poletti has down played the importance of the wide barrier allotted to 2011 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) favourite Luckygray at Ascot on Saturday.

After the four-year-old  received the outside alley in 14, he eased in betting markets throughout Australia.

TABsportsbet has turned out the recent Railway Stakes winner from $2.60 to $2.90 in the past 24 hours .

Poletti’s preference was for a midfield draw but holds a philosophical view.

He cited 14 was better than an inside draw as Luckygray is best when given galloping room.

“We’ll have a game plan come race day and so far everything’s worked well for Shaun (O’Donnell) and I,” he said.

“In this sort of race, I would have liked to have drawn somewhere between five and nine but I’ve pulled this one out so we’ll devise a plan around that.”

Luckygray was promoted to the winners’ circle by stewards in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) on November 19.

In one of Perth’s most controversial racing decisions, Kiwi galloper He’s Remarkable was demoted after it deemed it caused enough chain reaction interference to Luckygray to cost him the race.

The connections of He’s Remarkable are yet to make a decision on whether to appeal that verdict.

In the Railway, Luckygray ran a great race to past the post second, protest or not.

He clearly finished best from near the tail after he had drawn barrier 12 of 16 runners.

One pleasing note for Poletti is that the past five Classic winners have jumped wide barriers including 2009 winner Sniper’s Bullet (16) and 2008 winner Niconero (14).

Poletti is aware of Luckygray’s pedigree that questions its ability to run out the 1800m.

The grey is by Magic Millions Classic winner Bradbury’s Luck out of Damah Lady (by Makaddamah).

The dam won four races but none beyond 1400m.

“Since his last gallop on Tuesday, he had just a little bit of general tightening,” Poletti said.

“We checked him again and he didn’t need any attention whatsoever, so we’ll just keep him happy until Saturday.

“It’s a different race.

“We’re in stayer’s territory now and it’s a tough race.

“He’s not bred to be a stayer and he’s too brilliant to be a stayer so this is probably his mark.”

While Luckygray was close enough to get the protest in the Railway, Ranger was too badly stopped in his tracks to get close enough after the interference occurred.

His sixth is best forgiven and of the short priced Kingston Town Classic runners, the Grant Williams-trained galloper is best drawn in three.
