A twenty horse field plus three emergencies make up the 2017 Goodwood and a close in barrier for Black Heart Bart will add to his chances of making it back to back wins in the Adelaide Festive Of Racing’s feature Group 1 sprint.

Brad Rawiller is back in the saddle again this year after steering Black Heart Bart to his first Group 1 win in last year’s Goodwood with 57kg from barrier two and the Darren Weir trained six year old is only up 2kg to 59kg after winning four more Group 1 races in the last twelve months.

Following his Goodwood win, Black Heart Bart went on to win the Group 1 $500,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 $500,000 Underwood Stakes (1800m) both at Caulfield during the 2016 Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The Blackfriars six year old then continued his Group 1 winning form during the 2017 Melbourne Autumn Carnival with wins in the $500,000 Ladbrokes C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) and in the Group 1 $500,000 italktravel Futurity Stakes (1400m), both at Caulfield again.

Weir will also saddle up Rageese who drew barrier eleven with Damian Lane taking over the reins from Luke Nolen who was aboard last start for a seventh to Malibu Style in the Listed $120,000 Bel Esprit Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on April 22.

Equal top weight on 59kg is the Peter Gelagotis trained Malaguerra who has drawn barrier nine with Ben Melham retaining the ride after he finished seventh last start to Chautauqua in the Group 1 $2.5m Darley T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 1.

Gelagotis also has Illustrious Lad in The Goodwood but the five year old has a tough task ahead after drawing barrier twenty-three in the original draw and will jump from the outside gate when the field is reduced to twenty runners at start time.

Caulfield trainer Mick Price will also saddle up two runners in The Goodwood with Secret Agenda and Bassett drawing barriers at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Last start Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes winner Secret Agenda drew barrier five with Damien Oliver sticking with her while Bassett with Mark Zahra booked to ride came up with the twenty marble but could move in two spots if all the emergencies fail to get a start.

The Tony McEvoy trained Hey Doc was also out of luck at the barrier draw, coming up with gate twenty-one, giving jockey Luke Currie plenty of work to do.

Hey Doc beat the three year olds two starts back in winning the Group 1 $750,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 4 and has had a freshen up since running ninth to It’s Somewhat in the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 1.

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig will be represented with two Goodwood runners, Faatinah at barrier four with Regan Bayliss and Vega Magic at barrier 6 with Craig Williams.

Faatinah is coming off an improved last start fourth to Karacatis in the Group 3 $175,000 D C McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on May 6 while the well credentialed Western Australian sprinter Vega Magic will be having his first run for the Lindsay Park Team and his first run since winning the Group 3 $250,000 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m) at Ascot in Peth on December 10 last year.

In-form local sprinter Riziz has drawn the rails with Todd Panell to ride again.
