Black Caviar has made a surprise appearance in the Newmarket Handicap nominations when they were released yesterday.

The super mare won last year’s edition of the race carrying an extraordinary 58 kilograms and was not expected to feature in any more handicap races.

The Newmarket Handicap will take place on Saturday March 10 at Flemington Racecourse.

Trainer Peter Moody nominated the five-year-old mare for the race as a back-up plan.

“I have thrown in a nomination just like I threw in a nomination for Dubai,” Moody said.

“It’s just in case. Who knows what could happen? She could get a stone bruise.”

However, it appears unlikely she would run even if the race suited her campaign, as she would surely be weighted out of the race.

“Who knows what weight she would get in the Newmarket?” Moody said.

Black Caviar is currently being targeted towards three races during the Melbourne autumn racing carnival, with her first being in this Friday’s Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley.

She will be looking to extend her unbeaten victories to a total of 17 when she lines up for the Australia Stakes against just six other runners, the most promising of which seems  to be stablemate Doubtful Jack.

Under the weight-for-age conditions of the race, Black Caviar will carry the lightest weight of 56.5 kilograms.

The Bel Esprit mare will then saddle up for the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes on February 11, before taking on the Group 1 Futurity Stakes on February 25.

Black Caviar’s biggest foe Hay List is also one of the Newmarket Handicap nominations.

Hay List is in currently preparing to make his comeback after falling victim to injury and a severe bout of colic in May last year.

His last race was when finishing second to Black Caviar in the Group 1 BTC Cup at Doomben during the Brisbane winter carnival.

Regular jockey Glyn Schofield had his first ride aboard the horse during a track gallop at Gosford yesterday morning.

“It was the first time I’ve ridden him this preparation since he was injured up in Brisbane and I couldn’t be happier with the way he feels,” Schofield said.

“Obviously he’s not as fit as he was the last time I rode him because he’s on the comeback trail but he feels good.

“He trials on Friday and that will give us a lot more of an indication but I’m very happy with the horse.”

Albert The Fat, Hallowell Belle, Lights Of Heaven, Ortensia, Toorak Toff and Woorim are also included in the Newmarket Handicap nominations.
