Barrier the Doubt for Filly in Tatt’s Tiara

Sunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick’s confidence took a hit when Doubtfilly drew barrier 14 of 16 for Saturday’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) but he isn’t willing to write off her chances just yet.

Kendrick heads to Eagle Farm chasing his first Group 1 and was buoyed by the three-year-old’s third-place finish behind boom filly Peron in the Gai Waterhouse Classic last week.

“Everyone is talking about Peron but I thought Doubtfilly’s run was just as good,” Kendrick told Racing Queensland.

“I thought her run in the Gai Waterhouse was terrific and she pulled up the best she’s ever done after it.”

The former Mackay trainer said the seven-day turnaround is not a concern despite it being only the second time she has backed up in her career.

The only other time Doubtfilly has had such a short break between races was in the 2012 Golden Slipper when she ran fourth to superstar colt Pierro.

Also on the youngster’s side is the record of fillies in the race. The last three editions have seen three-year-olds defeat the older mares and 14 have been successful since the race began in 1989.

“I would have liked a better barrier and it’s a little frustrating but she’s still in with a good chance,” Kendrick said.

Doubtfilly is one of three fillies taking on the older horses, joined in the field by Peron and the Anthony Cummings-trained Diamond Earth.

Peron has received plenty of hype this winter, going unbeaten in three starts this campaign, and is chasing a second straight Tatt’s Tiara win for trainer John Thompson who prepared Pear Tart for victory last year.

Diamond Earth was last seen running seventh in the Lightning Handicap but won the Denise’s Joy Stakes at Scone last month.
