The future of veteran mare Yosei will be decided after she runs in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 12.

Yosei has competed at the highest level of racing since she made her debut in 2010 but has not been victorious since her win in the Group 1 Tattersalls Tiara (1400m) during the 2011 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
The daughter of Invincible Spirit has failed to fire this preparation, finishing tenth in the Group 3 Theshark.com.au Stakes (1100m), 13th in the Listed Drummond Golf Stakes (1200m) and 12th in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), and trainer Stuart Webb has admitted that he will be reassess his plans with the six-year-old after she contests the Toorak Handicap.
“Her next run will be in the Toorak and depending on what she does in that we will then make plans for the future,” Webb told TVN.
“If she performs really well in the Toorak we’ll go to the Myer Classic and the Emirates Stakes, just like she did last year.
“But if she struggles we will come back a notch and run in a few of the set-weights and penalties races which she will get into well, because she hasn’t won a race for such a long time.”
Yosei finished towards the tail of the field in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and was never a factor in the race but Webb said that circumstances went against the Group 1 winning mare and he was happy with the performance.
“The race wasn’t really run to suit her and I wasn’t disappointed in how she ran,” Webb said.
“We know she can’t carry the big weights because she is just a little thing, so I have to be very mindful of that going forward with her.”
Yosei has recorded only four wins in her forty race starts but has accumulated $1,271,075 and has competed at the highest level of racing on 26 occasions.
She will be contesting the Toorak Handicap for the third time after finishing seventh behind King Mufhasa in 2011 and third behind Solzhenitsyn in 2012.
