Yankee Rose back on target for Golden Rose Stakes

Group 1 Inglis Sires’ winner Yankee Rose is back on target to make her 2016 Spring Carnival debut in the Group 1 $1m Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 10 after winning a jump out at the Sunshine Coast today.

Yankee Rose just did enough to beat her two rivals in a 1270m jump out and just gained a pass mark from trainer David Vandyke.

The reluctant track worker performed much better today than she did a fortnight ago when she could only manage to finish fourth in a five horse 850m barrier trial at the Sunshine Coast leaving Vandyke with plenty of questions to be answered.

But the Group 1 winning trainer admits that Yankee Rose is not a good early morning track worker but does perform at her best under race conditions.

“I thought she went fair. She was shaken up and off the bit to catch the other two in the jump out and she found the line well,” Vandyke told G1X.

“She felt good, her recovery was good. We’ve learnt not to expect too much from her at the barrier trials or in her track work – she’s not a filly that works or trials like a Group 1 horse, she saves her best until race day and that’s where she’s at.

“We weren’t expecting too much and we didn’t get too much.”

Yankee Rose has proved in the past that she can produce a good first up performance with a fast finishing second to Capitalist in the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on March 19 before storming to victory in the Group 1 $1m Inglis Sires’ (1400m) at Randwick two weeks later.

Vandyke will give Yankee Rose one more barrier trial at the Sunshine Coast on August 30 before heading to Sydney for a first up tilt at the Golden Rose Stakes.

Yankee Rose will then run in the Group 1 $500,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on October 1 before a decision is made if she will go around in the Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22.

“The first two races are the main two targets. The Cox Plate will depend on how she performs in those,” Scott Darby, who heads the Darby Racing Syndication that race Yankee Rose, said.

“All going well, we’ll head to the Oaks after that. We’ve always thought that she’s a filly who’s going to appreciate the extra ground.”

The Group 1 $1m Crown Oaks (2500m) is run at Flemington on the third day of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival on November 3.

In early Golden Rose Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, Yankee Rose shares the top spot at $7 with Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and John O’Shea’s promising Lonhro colt Impending.
