The undefeated Sistonic was a clear favourite in early betting markets for the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m), but she was a surprise drifter in the hour leading up to the race, while there was money for a number of her rivals.
Co-trainer Tom Dabernig said yesterday that Sistonic did not have to lead in the early stages of the Typhoon Tracy Stakes, but the promising filly got caught in an early speed battle with Eloping before jockey Michael Walker to her to the lead.
Sistonic kicked away from her rivals at the 250 metre mark, but the tough run in transit took its toll on the three-quarter relative to Black Caviar and she tired badly late before Written Dash swooped home late to beat Royal Snitzel and Matilija at a starting price of $101.
The Typhoon Tracy Stakes was the first win at Group level for battling Bendigo-based trainer Danny Curran, but he told the media after the race that he was not surprised Written Dash was able to score an upset win and confirmed that the Written Tycoon filly would head to the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m) on March 21.
“I was surprised at the price, but not the win,” Curran said.
“She disappointed last start at Flemington so we gave her a nice freshen up and aimed her for this.
“She will go to the Bendigo Guineas for next start.
“I think she will be ideally suited by 1400 (metres) on her home track.”
Written Dash recorded her first race win at Horsham in October of last year and she recorded a maiden metropolitan victory when she beat the talented Birds Of Tokyo in the Appelles Handicap (1200m) at Sandown on November 19 before she finished a close second behind Éclair Choice in the 1Print Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley on November 29.
The three-year-old was unable to repeat those strong performances in the Riverside Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day and Nouvelle Star Handicap (1400m) at the same venue on January 10, but clearly took a great deal of benefit from a freshen-up ahead of the Typhoon Tracy Stakes.
David Hayes is yet to confirm his plans with Sistonic, but the filly is likely to be sent to the spelling paddock.
