Woorim Weight No Issue For Browne

Jockey Damian Browne will ride Woorim at the final meeting of the Winter Carnival

The Sunshine Coast is the setting for the final meeting  of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and jockey Damian Browne has one more chance to impress while in the spotlight.

Browne is one of the best jockeys in Queensland and the 2011 carnival was to be his audition to the rest of Australia.

When he has rode he’s done very well but a crucial three weeks suspension right in the middle has robbed him of some big opportunities.

At Caloundra on Saturday he gets one final crack with Woorim in the Glasshouse Handicap.

While he’s one of the favourites it’s going to take a big run with an expected 58.5kgs on his back.

If he were to win with that load it would be a new record in the event up from 57.5kg which Hard To Catch and Pinnacles won with.

It’s also a huge jump from the comparatively generous 53kg Woorim was dealt for his winning run in the 2010 Glasshouse Handicap.

Browne isn’t too concerned by the pending allotment though and feels the horse can handle being the toppy.

“He’s a big strong horse and he’s proved in the past that he can carry weight,” Browne said.

“Providing that the weather stays good and the track good he’ll be a good chance.”

There’s no confirmed decision of weights at the moment however both Woorim and Phelan Ready are the current top raters at 105.

Racing Queensland Handicapper Nathan Bourke explains that both horses have been penalised in weight after their impressive one-two finish in the QTC Cup.

“It could be argued Woorim and Phelan Ready are entitled to a bit more than 58kg,” he said.

” I know he hasn’t won for a while, but Phelan Ready was very good first up in the Group 2 QTC Cup, where he had 56kg on a 52kg limit.”

Their weighting will mean main rival Adnocon has a kilo of two breathing space when he line sup in the stalls.

The dual Eye Liner Stakes champion has received no penalty from his win at Ipswich and will retain 56.5kgs.

“This is a tougher race than the Eye Liner, so that’s why Adnocon won’t go up this week,” Bourke said.
