Trainer Kelso Wood is preparing to race Sizzling in this weekend’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast.

Wood is hoping to put his previous Magic Millions bad luck behind him when he saddles Sizzling up for the $2 million race.

Sizzling is expected to jump from barrier five in the race, which will be a nice change from his recent wide barrier draws.

“He hasn’t got the turn of foot from bad barrier to get up there and sit off the speed,” Wood said.

The two-year-old colt finished second in his last two starts after jumping from barrier eight and 12, respectively.

Sizzling finished second to Magic Millions favourite Driefontein in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes last start when his unfortunate barrier left him caught at the tail end of the field.

Wood has decided not to place blinkers on Sizzling for Saturday’s Magic Millions after he was unable to properly test the effect they would have on the horse.

“Time had run out and I wasn’t going to put him in trials and barrier trials when it didn’t suit him,” the trainer said.

“He went a bit keenly with them (in his first trial).”

Wood insists Sizzling is at his best ahead of Saturday’s race.

“He had a gallop on Tuesday morning,” he said.

“He galloped with a mate… he gave the horse a length start (and) probably could have beat him by three or four but beat him by a length.

“His work was really good.”

The trainer sees Sizzling as a real chance in many of the upcoming feature races in the autumn carnival, as well as races such as the Caulfield Guineas in the spring.

“This horse, he’s going to be an outstanding two year old,” Wood said.

A win at Saturday’s Magic Millions carnival would but to bed a large amount of misfortune experienced by Wood in previous years.

Wood lost the 1988 Magic Millions on a protest after Price Regent had passed the post in first position.

“We’ve had a lot of bad luck with Prince Regent ,” Wood said.

“Financially to me it would have been a great help (to have won the race).

“I probably could have paid the stables off.

“It was very heartbreaking for all concerned.”
