Winx to spell, no Emirates Stakes

An overseas campaign will be discussed for dual Cox Plate winner Winx as she heads to the paddock for a well deserved break following her record breaking victory in the Weight For Age Championship of Australasia last Saturday.

Trainer Chris Waller had considered giving Winx one more Spring Carnival run in the Group 1 $2m Emirates Stakes (2000m), the old weight for age Mackinnon Stakes, at Flemington on November 5, the last day of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Waller met with Winx’s owners and they decided to send the mare straight to the spelling paddock and then at a later date will discuss the super mare’s future options which could include an overseas campaign or be prepared for the rich 2017 Sydney Autumn Carnival, before aiming up for a third Cox Plate in the Spring.

Winx produced the best performance of her illustrious career when she made it thirteen wins on the trot with a devastating eight lengths win in the Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley last Saturday.

“The owners and I have jointly decided to spell Winx following her brilliant win in the William Hill Cox Plate on Saturday. Serious consideration was given to running in the Mackinnon Stakes in two weeks, however we have carefully deliberated on what is best for the horse as well as ensuring she spends a reasonable period in the spelling paddock,” Waller said in a statement he released on twitter today.

Waller said that besides a minor abrasion on her hind leg, Winx had pulled up in fine order and will be treated with antibiotics as well as a visit or two to the beach to help the healing process.

Winx is the winner of seventeen of her twenty-three starts, and hasn’t been defeated in her last thirteen starts since winning the Group 3 $125,000 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast during the 2015 Queensland Winter carnival.

Among her winning sequence of thirteen straight wins, Winx has won nine Group 1 races, including back to back wins in the Cox Plate as well as an Epsom, a Doncaster Mile, a Chipping Norton Stakes and a George Main Stakes all over the famous Randwick Mile.

Last Saturday’s Cox Plate winning cheque of $1.8 million took Winx’s overall prizemoney earnings to just over $9.3 million.
