Winx swept all before her during the Spring Carnival with three undefeated runs culminating in an electrifying four and three quarter lengths win in the Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 24.

The Street Cry mare had previously won the Group 2 $200,000 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 12 before taking out the Group 1 $1m The Star 150th Epsom (1600m) at Randwick on October 3.

The Cox Plate win was actually Winx’s fifth win in succession following her two wins during the Queensland Winter Carnival as a three year old when she won the Group 3 $125,000 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) at the Sunshine Coast and the Group 1 $500,000 Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben during May.

Waller sent Winx straight to the paddock following Cox Plate victory, giving her a well-deserved break from the racetrack.

“It’s the first time’s had a good spell,” Waller told racing.com.

“Basically she did it all of last year in one hit – I think she had a couple of two-week spells in between and raced basically at every carnival – and fortunately her last run was her best run, being the Cox Plate.

“She had a six-week break and she’s back in training now.”

“It’s still obviously very early days, but she looks fine and we’re expecting big things from her in the autumn and then it will all be geared towards the spring again, to hopefully defend her title in next year’s Cox Plate.”

Waller has pin pointed the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Day Two of ‘The Championships’ in April as Winx’s main Autumn Carnival goal but the multiple premiership winning trainer has already pencilled in a trip back to Moonee Valley in the Spring to defend her Cox Plate title.

“She’ll do all her racing in Sydney at this stage, it’ll be a three or four-run preparation finishing up in the Queen Elizabeth, which is obviously Sydney’s comparable race to a Cox Plate – or that’s the way it’s trying to head – and being a $4 million race it’s a logical target.” Waller said.

Sydney’s leading jockey Hugh Bowman has established a great affinity with Winx and has been in the saddle for her three Group 1 victories, The Queensland Oaks, The Epsom and the Cox Plate.

Bowman is currently riding in Japan but will head to Hong Kong to team up with Waller again when Preferment takes his place in the Group 1 HK$16.5m Longines Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Sha Tin on December 13.

In early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Winx has been installed as the $6 favourite ahead of last year’s winner Criterion at $9 and the Aidan O’Brien trained Highland Reel at $10.

Caulfield Cup winner Mongolian Khan is next in the market order at $12 with the Waller trained trio of Press Statement at $14, Kermadec at $15 and Preferment at $16 the next three in the betting.

Winx is the winner of nine races from fifteen starts and has earned over $3.6 million in prizemoney.
