Bjorn Baker’s brilliant three year old Winning Rupert is on target for the $2m Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) at the Gold Coast on January 14 after making a one act affair of the $100,000 QTIF 3yo Plate (1200m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday.
The undefeated Winning Rupert was having his first run back this campaign and scorched away from his rivals to record a five and three quarter lengths win for in-form jockey Jeff Lloyd.
Baker campaigned Winning Rupert in Queensland during the Winter Carnival and after winning on debut in the 1000m two year old Plate at the Sunshine Coast on April 23 went on to win the Group 2 $175,000 Moet & Chandon Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 14.
Stable representative Clare Cunningham said the Winning Rupert had been prepared for a first up victory with three barrier trial wins at Randwick, Kembla Grange and his last one at Rosehill on November 22.
“That was an example of why he’s had three trials,” Cunningham said.
“He’s a very promising horse with a nice future.
“We don’t like getting ahead of ourselves but we’ve got a horse with a motor so fingers crossed with him.”
As well as chasing the rich Magic Millions 3yo Guineas prize, Winning Rupert is also on track to win a $500,000 bonus that the Brisbane Racing Club has on offer if he can win the two remaining legs of the three year old series, the Listed $100,000 Gold Edition Plate (1200m) at Doomben on December 17and the Group 3 $200,000 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) at Eagle Farm on December 31.
Baker is certain that Winning Rupert will take further improvement from his run last Saturday and will strip in better order when he lines up in the Gold Edition Plate.
“I thought he came back a bit bigger and better this preparation but race day is the true test so it was good to see him do that,” Baker said.
“He’s definitely shown us that he’s come back at least as good if not better than when he went out after last preparation and I’m sure he’ll be better with the first up run under his belt.”
The win by Winning Rupert also continued the sensational winning run of jockey Jeff Lloyd who was coming off a record breaking seven wins at the Sunshine Coast last Wednesday with the Written Tycoon colt being of four winners for the day at Eagle Farm.
Lloyd also scored on Winning Rupert’s stablemate Brooklyn Storm in the 1200m Class 3 Plate, as well as winning on Dream Finish for Toowoomba trainer Michael Nolan in the 1825m BenchMark 80 Handicap and on Man Of His Word for Gold Coast trainer Bruce Hill in the 1500m Class 6 Handicap.
