Williams Quartet Looks To Dominate Railway Stakes

Grant Williams has a fantastic chance of claiming victory in the 2011 Railway Stakes with a team of four horses to start in the $1 million event.

With a field of 16 it puts him in an incredible position, especially given a couple of them are given quite a good winning chance.

The pick of the bunch is undoubtedly Ranger, a five year old gelding that’s won six of 16 starts and placed another half a dozen times.

Most importantly though he’s won three in a row this prep and he comes into the Railway Stakes in tremendous form having won the Waroa-Lee Steere Stakes by two lengths.

“His last run was really good, it was probably his personal best,” Williams said.

“We’ve probably worked out he’s better working just off the pace.”

In that run he settled in seventh spot in the nine horse field having sat in third of 10 before that.

“We’ve always had a pretty big opinion of him, he’s taken a few runs to work it out but the ease he went past them was a surprise,” he said.

While Ranger is his most favoured horse in the market, he’s not dismissing the rest of his team.

Lords Ransom was an $81 chance second up in the Waroa-Lee Steere Stakes and he ran accordingly beating just two home.

He will appreciate more ground here but even the mile will probably be too short for the 2010 Perth Cup champion.

“He’ll probably be around the mark this week, 1600m now he’s had a couple of trials and a couple of runs he’s starting to get a little bit more dower,” Williams said.

Horse three in the team is Battle Emblem which like Lords Ransom needs every bit of the 1600m and then some.

He ran second in the Kalgoorlie Cup over 2300m back on September 17 but was second last in the Waroa-Lee Steere Stakes after a freshen up.

“He’s been racing in this company now for a couple of years so he’s used to it,” Williams said.

“Perfect trip, bit of a smokey at long odds.”

The real wide shot though comes in the form of his sole mare entry Tranquility.

She only made the field after finishing second in the Peters Stakes last weekend but Williams says she’s a huge chance at juicy odds on the quick backup.

“Close to our best chance on the minimum, she’s a very nice horse, last run was a super effort,” he said.
