Whobegotyou & Atlantic Jewel In Doubt For Autumn

Whobegotyou will almost certainly not race again this season and his entire racing career seems in very real danger.

The Mark Kavanagh trained runner and one time Cox Plate favourite had his spring carnival cut short after succumbing to injury.

First it was the Cox Plate he missed, then the entire carnival, now it seems the autumn is out as well and his entire future in jeopardy.

“I don’t think he will race into the autumn,” Kavanagh said.

“We will wait and see but at this stage an autumn campaign is not on the agenda.”

It’s a familiar story for the trainer who now faces an anxious wait with his other stable top liner Atlantic Jewel.

The unbeaten filly was the most dominant horse of the spring before she was withdrawn from the Crown Oaks with back problems.

At the time they were expected to be only a minor inconvenience but now her future appears foggy as well.

“She had some scintigraphy tests done after that race which showed there were some ‘hot’ spots but no bone damage,” Kavanagh said.

“We plan to have some more tests after Christmas, so we won’t be doing anything serious with her until then.”

That will surely put plans back too far for the start of the Melbourne autumn but Kavanagh refuses to rule anything in or out.

“Everything is a possibility but it is clouded now until we have those tests done,” he said.

Atlantic Jewel burst onto the scene in 2011 dominating her more experienced rivals with ease, her incredible seven length win in the Wakeful Stakes leading many to draw comparisons between her and super mare Black Caviar.
