Who Shot Thebarman is currently available at 2015 Melbourne Cup odds of $21 and trainer Chris Waller believes that the tough stayer is great value to finish in the placings in the Group 1 event at Flemington tomorrow afternoon.

Who Shot Thebarman is yet to record a placing in four race starts during the 2015 Spring Racing Carnival, but he performed strongly in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on September 5, the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) at same venue on September 19 and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4 before he found the line strongly to finish seventh in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 17.
The Yamani Vital gelding finished a gallant third in the Melbourne Cup 12 months ago and Waller told Racing Ahead that the seven-year-old is an even stronger horse ahead of the 2015 edition of the race.
“We are very happy,” Waller said.
“He is on a path that is similar to last year if not a little bit bigger and stronger.
“I can’t fault him and history seems to repeat itself when it comes to placegetters.
“I feel if a horse is still in its peak years, and I would consider him to be in that zone still, and he certainly hasn’t gone backwards.
“He is great value to run a place at least.”
Who Shot Thebarman was settled in the middle of the Melbourne Cup field 12 months ago before he took the inside runs in the final stages of the race, but Waller said that he will not give jockey Blake Shinn any firm instructions on how to ride the Auckland Cup winner and he is just hopeful that the gelding will be ready to strike at the 400 metre mark.
“Like all of our runners, we won’t tie our jockeys down to any specific instructions,” Waller said.
“It will unfold and they will work out where they need to be to ensure that each horse is in its comfort zone.
“Hopefully they are there at the 400 metre mark in challenging positions.”
