Whiskey Allround To Have Spring Trial in San Domenico Stakes

The 2013 Spring Racing Carnival path for exciting gelding Whiskey Allround will be decided after he runs in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

The Tony Gollan-trained three-year-old won his first three career starts in Brisbane and was far from disgraced during the 2013 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, finishing an unlucky second behind Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) before being injured in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) and sent to the spelling paddock.

Gollan told Sky Racing HQ that Whiskey Allround has impressed with two recent barrier trial performances and is ready to run a big race in the Sam Domenico this weekend.

“His first trial was very soft against a bunch of two-year-old maidens and he just ambled around and won easily,” Gollan said.

“His second trial was against open company horses and he ran second to Someday and wasn’t pushed out that much in that trial either.

“We expect a lot of the same, he does go well fresh and he is really forward for his first-up assignment and off the good alley I expect him to be very competitive.”

Gollan has not settled on the major spring assignment for Whiskey Allround with a number of major races still a possibility.

He could remain in Sydney for the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 14 or head to Melbourne where he would contest the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m), the Blue Sapphire (1200m) and the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Victoria Derby Day.

Gollan said he hasn’t decided on either option but will get a better idea on where to head after Whiskey Allround resumes on Saturday.

“We aren’t getting too far ahead of ourselves, we will just get the San Domenico over and done with first and see where he measures up,” Gollan said.

“We will see how he comes back and then plan our move from there.

“This is a small but strong field and will give us a good line on where we can head for the rest of the spring.”

Gollan is chasing his second Group 1 victory having won the 2012 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) with Temple Of Boom.
