Weary is having his first start since running last of twelve in the Group 2 $175,000 Tattersalls Club Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in September last year and has been primed for a good first up showing with a 900m Rosehill barrier trial second on January 20.
Top Sydney jockey Tommy Berry will be back aboard Weary on Saturday after partnering him when third to Sacred Falls in the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) and second in the Group 1 $400,000 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick during the 2104 Autumn Carnival.
And even though Berry hasn’t been aboard Weary in his preparation this campaign, he has seen the five year old grey at the trials and expects a forward showing especially with the Rosehill track being rated a heavy 8 on Friday with sunny conditions forecast for the weekend.
“I haven’t been on Weary’s back since he ran those good races in the Group 1s last year but I watched his trial the other day and he looked really impressive,’’ Berry told The Daily Telegraph.
“Weary is a horse that can perform first-up and the track will be rain-affected so that will definitely suit him,’’ Berry said.
“I don’t want it too heavy as it can take something out of a horse when it’s resuming.
“But he is up against a lot of horses having their first-up runs so they are all in the same boat.’’
The European import looked like becoming one of Chris Waller’s rising stable stars during the 2014 Autumn Carnival with two Group 1 placings but he failed to recapture that form in the Spring.
Weary’s only win in Australia came with a victory over Leebaz in the Group 3 $150,000 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) at Rosehill on April 5, 2014, which saw him sent out the $4.40 favourite for the Doncaster Mile before running third.
The French bred gelding has a terrific wet track record with two wins and a third on a heavy track and four placings on the soft.
Weary is one of five runners from the Waller stable going around in the weight for age Expressway Stakes with the leading trainer also saddling up Group 1 winners Boban, Beaten Up and Hawkspur as well as the promising Bagman.
The Paul Messara trained three year old Panzer Division has been installed the early favourite for the Expressway Stakes with Ladbrokes.com.au and is currently marked $3.40 ahead of Weary at $5.50 and Boban at $6.50.
Next in the market order is The Peter and Paul Snowden trained That’s Good Idea at $7, Gai Waterhouse’s Driefontein at $8.50, Thermal Current at $11 and Territory at $12.
