Wet track to help Mossfun find best form in Arrowfield Sprint

The prospect of a wet track at Randwick on Saturday will help 2014 Golden Slipper winner Mossfun get back to her best form in the Group 2 $500,000 Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m).

Mossfun was the star of her two year old season, winning four from five starts, but hasn’t visited the winner’s stall in three runs since winning the Group 1 $3.5m Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on a heavy track just over twelve months ago.

But co-trainer John Hawkes has seen some improvement from the Mossman filly with a last start second to Shamalia in the Group 3 $150,000 TAB Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 21 and knows the proven wet tracker will be at home a soft track on Day Two of ‘The Championships’.

“She ran well at Rosehill and the wet track will help her,’’ Hawkes told The Daily Telegraph.

Tommy Berry has been aboard Mossfun in all her three Autumn Carnival starts and will be on board the filly again this weekend and can see her returning to form a rain affected track.

“Her best runs have been on soft ground and she hasn’t had that a lot this preparation,” Berry said in his Sportsman column today.

“So if it is a soft track I can be pretty confident she will be right there.”

Day One of ‘The Championships’ last Saturday had to be transferred to Monday after Randwick was waterlogged following a week of rain.

Monday’s meeting started off on a heavy 9 and improved during the day to be rated a soft 7 for the final race on the ten event program.

There hasn’t been much improvement during the week and on Friday afternoon the Randwick surface was rated a soft 6 with the forecast of more showers.

The Joe Pride trained Kuro heads the market order for the Arrowfield 3yo Sprint at $2.90 coming back to three year old company after running second to Sweet Idea against the open class sprinters in the Group 1 $400,000 Canadian Club Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill on March 21.

Earthquake is also coming back to her own age group after finishing fifth to Lucky Hussler in the Group 1 $400,000 Brown Baldwin William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 27 and is on the second line betting at $4.60 ahead of Rubick at $5.50 and Mossfun at $7.50.

Arrowfield 3yo Sprint market order at Ladbrokes.com.au: $2.90 Kuro, $4.60 Earthquake, $5.50 Rubick, $7.50 Mossfun, $8 Bring Me The Maid, $9 Delectation, $19 Nostradamus, $21 Rekindled Power, $51 Soldi Domani, $61 Confedarate, Puzzling Wonder.
