May’s Dream stamped herself as a filly to watch with an impressive victory in the Procal Dairies Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield yesterday.

The New Approach filly was far too good for her competition, sweeping down the outside of the field with 2000 metres left to run, and is set to make the step-up to Group 1 level for the first time in the Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 16.

While May’s Dream may struggle to beat Guelph in the Thousand Guineas, a number of racing experts believe that she looks like an ideal filly for the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) but trainer Darren Weir is unsure whether she will make it that far into her preparation.

“She has always been a nice filly and she has always shown us a little bit from day one,” Weir told RSN.

“My only little concern for the Oaks is that if you look at her in the yard there isn’t a lot of her and she is a pretty late foal so whether she gets there I am not too sure.

“If she does I think that she can stay a bit.

“She had two weeks off in the paddock down at Warrnambool so she will be fit enough it will just be whether she can handle the campaign.

“She will be better with another break or two for sure but in saying that they are only three once so if she is coping with it we will push on.”

May’s Dream is out of tough mare and former Weir stable star She’s Archie, who finished second behind champion mare Makybe Diva in the 2003 Melbourne Cup (3200m), and Weir said there are plenty of similarities between mother and daughter.

“There is actually a lot there,” Weir said.

“If you watch them walk around the parade ring they are very relaxed and they have that sort of racing style as well.

“They relax and she seems to have a turn-of-foot at this stage when you want it.”

May’s Dream will have her next start in the Caulfield Guineas before contesting the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day in the lead-up to the Crown Oaks.
