Weight No Issue But Trip A Query For Catapulted

Catapulted is the best horse in tomorrow’s Magic Millions Cup and there’s few people who’d argue that point.

He has the runs on the board against some of the best horses in the country and a career that regularly see’s black type starts.

He’s far from a shoe in on the Gold Coast though with a couple of key concerns for the Mark Kavanagh trained runner.

The first and most obvious is the big 60kg weight, it’s 3.5kg more than his nearest rival  and 6kg more than some of the other top chances.

He has handled weight like this in the past though and Kavanagh sent him here knowing what he would be facing.

In fact before he came up he said he’d rather have a big weight as the best horse in the race rather than getting a light weight and running out of his depth.

Given how well he knows the horse many would be inclined to ignore the burden and have faith he’ll shoulder it comfortably enough.

An area where people may not be able to be so confident though is the 1400m trip.

This is only the third time Catapulted has run this journey and on his past two attempts he’s come up with nothing.

On this question mark Kavanagh isn’t so confident either but says there have been some good signs.

“The 1400m is suspicious but in saying that he’s won at 1300m and he’s more settled now than a year ago when he last attempted it,” he said.

He’s also buoyed by the fact he’s racing in better form than when he last tackled the trip.

“I thought on what he did at Flemington you could say he’s not far off his best,” Kavanagh said.

“He had them under pressure a long way out and ran a sizzling time. If this wasn’t a quality handicap he would be carrying a bit more weight but having said that he has to give away hometown advantage.”

Catapulted is currently a $3.50 favourite for the 2012 Magic Millions Cup.
