Weekend Special just as Kav thought

Front runner Weekend Special added a new dimension to his races, albeit by error, when winning the Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge (955m) at Moonee Valley tonight.

The Mark Kavanagh trained four-year-old bungled the start from barrier eight and settled last early.

The race was lead by Turbo Qui with Dark Valley and the duo set a strong pace in front of Globalwarmingsceptic who was third on the fence.

That horse suffered interference at the home turn and went backwards as Turbo Qui kicked clear in the straight.

Michael Rodd aboard Weekend Special hadn’t panicked and kept the horse together.

Rodd ducked inside two weakening horses at the point of the home turn before coming wide.

Turbo Qui started to fade at the 100m and the Adelaide-based galloper scored his first win in Melbourne.

Daniel Stackhouse on Kenny Kid had to take evasive action when Globalwarmingsceptic came back on him at the home turn.

He pushed out Chris Symons on Strike The Tiger and both horses ran home well without looking like winning.

“I was a bit disappointed (missing the start) with that, he is normally a speed horse,” Kavanagh said.

“I thought he was a good thing tonight, he ran his last 400m in 44.7 which isn’t too bad.

“He has a fair bit of ability.”

The win brought up a double for Rodd who won the first race on It’s Crunch Time.

“Just before the gates opened he got his head down and the barrier attendants had to get it up,” Rodd explained.

“He totally blew the start, but the way the race was run it was going to suit something running on.

“He had a soft run during the race and thank god I was able to get to the outside.

“I wasn’t able to go on holidays until I rode this one.”

Weekend Special ran 55.51 sec for the trip, the quickest time this season which has put Kavanagh in prime running to win a car.

The trainer of the horse that runs the quickest time across the 18 race series will win a Mazda BT-50.

Tonight’s race was the seventh in the season long series.
