The weather has cleared in Melbourne today for the running of the Emirates Stakes Race Day at Flemington and the track has been upgraded to a soft 7 with the rail out 6m for the entire course.
The Group 1 $1m Emirates Stakes (1600m) for the milers and the Group 1 $1m Darley Classic (1200m) for the sprinters are the highlights of the nine race program on the last day of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The Flemington track copped a deluge on Oaks Day on Thursday when storms rolled across Melbourne which helped to take the week’s total rainfall to 50.4mm, forcing track manager Mick Goodie to but the heavy 8 rating.
But with some fine weather since, Goodie and the Racing Victoria Stewards have noticed some improvement with the track, hence upgrading it to a soft 7 at 10.50am.
The Team Hawkes trained Messene is an Emirates Stakes scratching because of the wet track with co-trainer Wayne Hawkes happy to wait for another day to send the seven year old gelding around.
“It’s too wet and we are not going to go,” Hawkes told Sky Racing’s Racing HQ Saturday this morning.
“He doesn’t like a wet track. He didn’t really handle it last Saturday when he got caught in behind then. The tracks too wet, let’s move on.”
The withdrawal of Messene has left the Emirates Stakes with a field of fifteen with the John O’Shea trained Bow Creek heading the market order at $4.80 at Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of last start Group 1 Myer Classic winner Politeness at $7.50, Kiwi galloper Turn Me Loose and German trained Magic Artist at $8 and Disposition at $8.50.
Peter Moody has scratched Bring Me The Maid from the Darley Classic leaving nine sprinters to contest the dash down the Flemington straight.
The Team Hawkes trained Chautauqua dominates the betting at $1.70 ahead of Stradbroke Handicap winner Srikandi at $7.50 and last year’s Darley Classic winner Terravista at $8.50.
