The Group 3 Vanity (1400m) is one of eight races running in support of the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday, attracting 13 three-year-old fillies in this morning’s nominations.
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Wawail leads the nominations, having won all four of her career starts. Wawail has run straight through since October, enjoying a win in the Listed Dandenong Stakes (1400m) in November, which was her first black-type race.
Peter Moody could saddle up to three runners in The Vanity after nominating Clover Lane, Miss Adele, and Sweet And Speedy.
Clover Lane finished third in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last August. She was no match for the winner but stuck on pretty well in the straight to finish one and a half lengths behind Bring Me The Maid.
Sweet And Speedy has won two of her four starts and placed in the other two. The filly finished third in the Group 3 Darley National Stakes (1200m) last May, displaying a good late effort, after which she was spelled for nearly nine months. The filly resumed in a Benchmark 70 at Sandown on January 26, winning by a short half-head.
Finally, Miss Adele has had three runs since January, winning her maiden at Benalla on the second before winning a Benchmark 70 over 1250m 15 days later. The filly then ran third in another Benchmark 70 on February 4, this time over 1200m.
Other three-year-old fillies nominated for the 2015 Vanity include Group 2 Wakeful Stakes third Fenway for Lee & Shannon Hope, Danny O’Brien’s Indulge, Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) runner-up Maastricht, and Robbie Griffiths’ Mossbeat.
Five of the 13 nominated fillies are nominated for the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 7, including Wawail, Sweet And Speedy, Primeiro, Maastricht, and Fenway. They will need to impress in The Vanity to continue forward towards the $500,000 race.
