Waterhouse Duo At Big Melbourne Cup Odds

The Gai Waterhouse-trained duo of Excess Knowledge and The Offer are both available at big 2015 Melbourne Cup odds, but the typically confident trainer is bullish about her charges chances in the Group 1 event at Flemington on Saturday.

The Offer was the early favourite for the 2014 Melbourne Cup after he recorded an impressive win in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), but he was unable to make it to the race after failing to fire in the Caulfield Cup.

The Montjeu gelding has follow an unconventional path to the 2015 Melbourne Cup after he started his campaign with a win in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury on August 20, but he is taking winning form into ‘the race that stops a nation’ following his tough staying performance in the Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) last weekend.

Waterhouse told RSN this morning that she is pleased with the condition of The Offer ahead of the 2015 Melbourne Cup and she believes that the imported stayer is worth an each-way bet at his current Melbourne Cup odds of $51.

“I am very, very pleased with both horses,” Waterhouse said.

“They have both done exceptionally well since their wins.

“The Offer is bouncing around like a four-year-old and he is an older than that.

“His win was good.

“He was very much out of form until he won the Bendigo Cup.”

Excess Knowledge only just snuck into the 2015 Melbourne Cup field when he scored a narrow victory in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, but Waterhouse believes that the Monsun entire is her best chance in the $6 million event.

Waterhouse said that Excess Knowledge has come out of his controversial Lexus Stakes victory in excellent condition and she believes that the entire will relish the quick back-up ahead of the 2015 Melbourne Cup.

“Excess Knowledge has a much better chance I believe,” Waterhouse said.

“I love the quick back-up.

“It is very much an old fashioned way of getting into the Cup.

“Hardly any trainers do it anymore, but I didn’t have a lot of options after he was beaten convincingly in the Herbert Power.

“He is very bright and he is in great form.”

Excess Knowledge opened at 2015 Melbourne Cup odds of $21 with Ladbrokes, but he is now out to $34, while The Offer is back into a quote of $41.
