Waller to Saddle Two in Australia Day Cup

Running on for a credible fourth in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) last time out on January 9th, trainer Chris Waller has confirmed classy stayer Multilateral will step-up to 2400m for the Listed Australia Day Cup at Randwick on Saturday.

Jumping from the gates well in the Gosford Cup, jockey Glyn Schofield settled Multilateral towards the rear of the field of ten, receiving a relatively good run in transit before displaying a strong turn of foot in the final straight to finish within two lengths of winner Midsummer Sun.

A proven performer over 2400m having taken out the Listed Tattersall’s Cup at the distance on New Year’s Day, Waller is confident all conditions of the Australia Day Cup will play into the strengths of Multilateral this weekend.

“Multilateral gets back to 2400 metres which should suit him better than Gosford which he found too short,” Waller told AAP.

Running a commendable fourth in the Tattersall’s Cup most recently, Waller is set to launch a two-pronged assault on the Australia Day Cup after revealing talented import Permit will also take to the Randwick course this weekend.

“The Australia Day Cup is a race which should suit him and also Permit,” he added.

Hugh Bowman rode Permit in the trial and will be on in the race while Glyn Schofield rides Multilateral again.”

Securing eight wins and a further six minor places over his 29 competitive starts so far, Multilateral will line up for his 14th start this time in when taking to the stalls for the Australia Day Cup.

A country Cups specialist, the Mizzen Mast gelding comfortably beat a classy field to the line in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) most notably on September 5th.

Beginning his racing career under the guidance of renowned French trainer Andre Fabre before transferring to the care of Michael Moroney in 2011 and finally arriving at Waller’s stables for the 2011/12 summer, Permit has quickly built to the task this time in; following up a fifth place finish in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) on November 29th with a luckless seventh when blocked for a run late in the Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) leading into his Tattersall’s Cup fourth.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2015 Australia Day Cup is due to be completed and released by midday Wednesday.
