All conquering Sydney trainer Chris Waller will have a strong chance to win his first Caulfield Cup with ten entries among the 173 when nominations closed today.

As well as winning his third Sydney trainer’s premiership, Waller was the leading trainer of Group 1 winners last season and he has a strong team of horses heading towards the 2013 Group 1 $2.65m BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 19.

Bayrir, the winner of the Group 1 US$500,000 Secretariat Stakes (1 mile 2 furlongs) at Arlington Park, and one of six Group 1 winners Waller has nominated, has had one run for the stable last weekend when second to stablemate Coup Ay Tee and is likely to improve dramatically with that experience.

Waller’s Group 1 winners that could head to Caulfield are Doomben Cup winner Beaten Up, Queensland Derby winner Hawkspur, Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent, Ranvet Stakes winner Foreteller and George Ryder winner Metal Bender.

Last year’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Robert Hickmott will be strongly represented with fourteen nominated headed by Green Moon and new stable arrivals, the imported Masked Marvel, Sea Moon and Seville  who finished first, third and fourth in the 2011 Group 1 £550,000 St. Leger Stakes (1 mile, 6 furlongs, 132 yards) at Doncaster in England.

Green Moon is certain to get plenty of weight after running second to Southern Sphere in the 2011 Caulfield Cup and then winning last year’s Group 1 $6.2m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington.

Sydney Cup winner Mourayan and promising galloper Fawkner are also among Hickmott’s entries.

Gai Waterhouse has nominated fourteen for Tulloch Lodge with last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente, Meltropolitan winner Glencadam Gold and Her Majesty The Queen’s stayer Carlton House heading her draft.

The Ed Dunlop trained Red Cadeaux heads the twenty international entrants which includes the Champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien’s Mars while dual Melbourne Cup winning trainer Dermold Weld has entered Irish four year old Voleuse De Coeurs.

Red Cadeuax was beaten a nose by Dunaden in the 2011 Melbourne Cup and has raced in five different countries since finishing eighth to Green Moon in last year’s Cup and collected a win in the 2012 Group 1 HK$15m Longines Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Sha Tin.

Cups King Bart Cummings will be trying to win his eighth Caulfield Cup and his first after forming a training partnership with his grandson James and has nominated Precedence, Commission and Kim Warrior.

Eight year old Precedence has earned well over a $1 million in prizemoney and if he goes around in October, it will be his second attempt after finishing tenth to Southern Speed in 2011.
