Velrosso's win at Rosehill gave trainer Chris Waller his 100th Sydney winner for the season

It was a case of when not if Chris Waller would crack the 100 win barrier in Sydney this season and today’s Rosehill meeting proved to be the decisive one.

Waller has become just the fifth trainer in history to train 100 metro winners in Sydney and it’s a deserved milestone for the clear premiership leader.

Velrosso was the horse which came up trumps on the day the two-year-old winning the Birch And Waite Foods Handicap.

Damien Oliver was the jockey with the honour of riding the win on a one off trip to Sydney to ride for the Waller stable.

Waller joins legendary names such as  Tommy Smith, Brian Mayfield-Smith, Gai Waterhouse and John Hawkes in reaching triple figures in a season.

“I won’t touch on it too much because I get pretty emotional with things like that, but it obviously means a hell of a lot to me,” Waller said.

“There’s no person more prouder than me to be training in Sydney.”

At just 37 years old there’s plenty to come for Waller who has only had 10 years to establish himself as arguably the best in Australia since moving from New Zealand.

He came close last year when he finished up on 94 but he’s kicked on in 2011 and has established a massive lead on the periership table.

With still a month remaining in the season as well there’s a good chance of plenty more to come.

It’s interesting timing for Oliver’s return given that he doesn’t have a regular relationship with the stable but they seem to hook up on vital occasions.

The best example is back in 2007 when Oliver won for Waller in both the Golden Slipper and The BMW.

“That was actually my first city double, let alone stakes double,” Waller said.

“And that was huge for me.”
