Waller Confident He’s Your Man Can Record First Australian Win

Trainer Chris Waller is confident that imported stayer He’s Your Man can record his maiden race win in Australia in the Craftsman Handicap (1720m) at Flemington on Saturday.

He’s Your Man made his debut for the Waller stable with an impressive second place finish behind Anlon in the George Watson Handicap (1400m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day in what was his first start in a race shorted than 2000 metres.

The Cape Cross entire will still be racing below his pet distance in the Craftsman Handicap, which Waller admits is a concern, but the leading trainer still believes it is a winnable race for the five-year-old entire.

“I was in Melbourne yesterday (Thursday) and he’s handling the hot weather well,” Waller told Racing Ahead this morning.

“He looks exceptional and has trained on well.

“The only problem is I think he’s looking for 2000.

“He put in a really good first up run over 1400m and I just hope that hasn’t taken the speed out of him.

“Realistically it’s a nice race for him, albeit at 1700m, and if he is going to be winning Listed and Group races then he should be able to win tomorrow.”

He’s Your Man made his racing debut at Clairefontaine in France in 2012, when prepared by Melbourne Cup winning trainer Alain De Royer-Dupre, and finished second behind Prince Cheri, who is now trained in Sydney by David Vandyke.

He recorded his maiden race win in the La Soie Aw Grand Prix Cic Banque Privee (2400m) at Lyon before finished his rookie preparation with a fourth place finish in the Prix Scaramouche at Saint Cloud.

He’s Your Man returned to the races in the Prix La Savonnerie (2000m) in April last year and returned to the winners circle with a narrow win over Temple Bar in the Prix Bedel (2400m) before making his debut at Group level in the Grand Prix De Chantilly (2400m).

The tough stayer was taken to England for the Listed Fred Archer Stakes (2414m) and finished second behind Godolphin stayer Lost In The Moment and was far from disgraced when fifth behind 2013 Melbourne Cup runners Royal Empire and Red Cadeaux in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2670m) at Newbury on August 17.

He’s Your Man ($2.60) is currently a narrow favourite in Craftsman Handicap betting markets from Darren Weir-trained Prince Of Penzance ($3.10) and Eraset ($9).
