Waller Begins Stable Expansion To Brisbane

Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller will look to expand his stable to Brisbane, beginning with two starters at Doomben this Saturday.

Waller is hoping to become more involved with his team of runners in different states.

“This year we’re going to spread our horses around more,” Waller said.

“Last season we won the Sydney premiership and normally we have all our ammunition here.

“But not any more. I’ve got 100 horses in work and from now on I’ll be spreading them around more in other places like Brisbane.”

The trainer’s first two Brisbane runners this season will be Russian Jar in the Ormiston College Old Collegian Handicap and Our Cannavaro in the Hanrick Curran Handicap.

Russian Jar will be second-up in the race after finishing fourth last start at Rosehill in the Rydges North Sydney Handicap.

“His first-up run in Sydney was good after a long spell,” Waller said.

“He was off for a while following joint surgery to remove a few bone chips.

“He’s come back well this campaign and he should be hard to beat up there.”

Our Cannavaro will be having the final race of his preparation at Doomben this weekend.

“He’s been racing well in Sydney but he’s coming to the end of his preparation and will go for a spell after this run,” Waller said.

“I wouldn’t say the Brisbane staying races are any weaker than down here.

“Since the winter the staying races in Sydney haven’t been that strong but he should be able to measure up to them in Brisbane.”
