A gutsy effort from race favourite Voice Commander has seen him run on to win the $140,000 Listed Wagga Wagga Gold Cup.

The six-year-old gelding put in a magnificent charge down the home straight to snatch the win away from gallant second place-getter World Wide on the line. Ironstein finished third.

Jockey Kathy O’Hara rode Voice Commander to victory in the Cup and was elated with the horse’s performance.

“It went to plan,” O’Hara said.

“We anticipated to lead all along and hopefully break their hearts.

“We wanted to take the sprint out of the horses that have a good turn of foot.”

Things almost turned ugly for the Commands gelding when he veered to the outside of the track after running into some unfavourable ground.

“He’s fit and we thought we’d let him stride from the half mile.

“He wanted to get off the track from the inside because it’s chopped up a bit there now but when he got to the middle he got a bit lost and wobbled around.

“But he just tried so hard. If he got beat you couldn’t say he didn’t try.”

Voice Commander has now won his last three consecutive starts and has accrued almost $700,000 in prize earnings for his thankful connections.
