Valley right choice for Eurell

Last night trainer Greg Eurell returned to Moonee Valley for the first time since winning the W S Cox Plate with Pinker Pinker and once again walked away a winner.

Victory came through his unlucky last start runner Coldens Choice who turned the tables on Veewap when in winning the $100,000 Moreton Hire Hcp (1600m).

Last start Colden Choice was held up behind horses in a similar race at the Valley on November 19 and Veewap swept down the outside to win.

Jockey Chris Symons wasn’t going to fall for the same trick and this time made his own luck in front.

Symons rated Coldens Choice perfectly, getting a breather from the 800m to the 500m before releasing the brakes.

The run of race favourite Turnitup should be forgiven.

He enjoyed a perfect run behind Colden Choice during the race.

Coming to the turn, Too Deadly made a move around the pack but laid in on Lord Pyrus who had settled second.

That horse in turn pushed Turnitup (Jake Noonan) into the running rail on three occasions.

It spoilt all chance the Peter Moody-trained galloper had.

At the 300m, Too Deadly faded while Veewap, who settled midfield, ran on well.

“He really likes the Valley, he gets into the right rhythm here and it all works for him,” Eurell said about Coldens Choice.

“I think I will look for something similar for him.

“The mile is suiting him at the moment, he is racing well over it so we will keep him at it.

“It is my first appearance at the Valley since the Cox Plate – two from two at the moment.

“The Cox Plate is on everyone’s hit list and thankfully I have won one.

“It makes you a bit hungrier and hopefully I can come back next year and win it again.”

Symons said a gear change was the key to the win of Coldens Choice.

“He was unlucky last time, today it was a different sort  of race and pace.

“I told Greg we would be in the first two, I rolled at a nice clip I thought.

“The key to this horse was the tongue tie, he went really well with it on last time.

“And the key here was to get him breathing properly and that is what he did.”

Eraset, Wind Shear and Too Many Reds all ran on fairly without threatening.
