Bookies could nearly offer 50 to 1 about an Australian bred and trained horse winning next year’s Melbourne Cup with yet another top class international set to join the fight.

Sanagas is the latest acquisition, the gelding rated the best stayer across all of United States.

He’s out of German origins though, much like this year’s Melbourne Cup third place getter Lucas Cranach.

While racing at home he had five starts for four wins and a second with his winning ways just as prominent in the US.

He’s had 10 runs there with seven victories, many in quality races.

His highlight was last start in the Group 1 Hollywood Turf Cup which he won by more than three lengths.

As always there’s a risk with bringing a horse from such different conditions to Australia but the fact is class like that doesn’t change.

Sanagas was bought by BC3 Thoroughbreds and inspired by the route of Unusual Suspect.

Unusual Suspect won the Hollywood Turf Cup last year and ran a luckless ninth in the Cup this year.

As yet no trainer has been confirmed but one will be decided on in the week following Christmas.

BC3 Thoroughbreds specialises in the trading of yearlings but even they couldn’t escape the lure of a Melbourne Cup triumph.

 “It gives us an opportunity to offer our clients another option, as winning a Melbourne Cup is something all racing fans are passionate about,” BC3 Thoroughbreds chief executive Bill Vlahos said.

They have already been in contact with chief handicapper of Racing Victoria, Greg Carpenter, and confirmed the horse is qualified for both the 2012 and 2013 Melbourne Cup’s.

He won’t come to Australia right away though with the horse set to have three more starts at Group 2 level under the guidance of Peter Miller in the US.

From there he may even go to the Sheema Classic in Dubai, potentially causing a showdown with his predecessor Unusual Suspect.

After that he’s scheduled to hit Australian turf on June 3 where he’ll be transferred to BC3’s new property at Torquay.
