Two years ago King Kool Kat was a six-year-old gelding with one win from 50 starts but come Saturday the Group 1 $1m 2011 Railway Stakes (1600m) $26 bolter may crown an unusual career.

Plagued with hoof problems, it took patience of Job but trainer Ian Glading finally got it right about 18 months ago and  after 56 starts King Kol Kat  had won seven races after stringing six in a row together.

The best was to follow when he won the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) at Belmont beating Impressive Jeuney and Grand Nirvana in June this year.

The eight-year-old has had four runs back at this prep and Glading thinks he has King Kool Kat (55kg)  right despite a Railway weight rises due to the withdrawal of topweights Wall Street, Albert The Fat and Grand Nirvana in the past fortnight.

“The weight situation has changed a lot,” Glading said.

“We were looking forward to him running on 52.5kg because he had not carried a weight like that in a long time.

“When it (handicap) last changed with Grand Nirvana pulling out, I had gone too far down his work program to cut off and go back to the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m).

“I have followed the same (training) pattern with him as I did when he won the Hyperion and he is looking more like a horse looking for a mile or further.”

King Kool Kat is one of four eight-year-olds in the field of 16.

Hot favourite Ranger continues to be backed firming from $3.80 to $3.60, after opening at $17 on November 4.

Good money flows for Victorian mare Avienus ($11), Kincaple ($15). While Ranger’s stable-mate Lords Ransom was specked from $61 into $31.
