Underthebonnet Salutes For Ahrens At Eagle Farm

Underthebonnet has produced his first win for new trainer Ben Ahrens in the Sky Racing Handicap at Eagle Farm today.

The four-year-old has now had five runs for Ahrens since being transferred from trainer Steele Ryan to his stables in May.

Underthebonnet was given to Ahrens after he finished a disappointing 12th of 16 in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

“Steele Ryan used to train him but I’ve had him for all five runs this preparation,” Ahrens said.

The trainer applauded jockey Chris Munce was his faultless ride aboard Underthebonnet.

“He’s been very consistent and deserved this win but a lot of credit goes to Chris Munce,” Ahrens said.

“It was a top ride. He swapped the whip over to his left hand when the horse wanted to get out and then swapped it back over when he hung the other way.”

Ahrens acquired the promising Underthebonnet due to a lucky coincidence.

“I only got him ‘cause his owners live down my way,” he said.

“His owners were looking for a trainer after Steele Ryan decided to cut his numbers back after the winter carnival.”

The trainer believes the horse will be a prominent city class contender in the future.

“I think he can win on a Saturday and he’ll get better over a bit more ground,” Ahrens said.

“He settled well once he jumped which is a good sign for the future.

“I don’t think he’s a true stayer just yet but in time he may be.”
