Tuscan Fire may appear the least qualified in this year’s Caulfield Cup field, however, that is not to say he isn’t worthy of his place.

The seven-year-old only came into his own this year, winning the Listed Mornington Cup over 2,400 metres in February.

Tuscan Fire returned to racing this spring by winning the $100,000 L Viney & McKnight Handicap by a nose at massive odds at Flemington first-up.

He has had another four solid runs this carnival and will be at his peak for today’s Caulfield Cup.

The Tuscanos gelding was purchased for just $7,000 by his current owners and was set for a jumping career before he began to show talent over the flat.

Tuscan Fire has now won 11 of his 51 race starts and has earned more than $605,000 in prize money.

Trainer Dan O’Sullivan admits that while Tuscan Fire is probably not the best runner in today’s Caulfield Cup, he still believes anything is possible if everything goes their way.

“The cream tends to rise to the top in these races and maybe the others might be a bit better,” O’Sullivan conceded.

“But when the barrier draw came out (barrier two) I started to get a bit more excited, that maybe he has some chance.

“He should get a nice run behind the pace and he’s really looking for the 2400 metres.

“He’s had the perfect campaign.”

Part owners, Terry and Elaine Kenna, will be at the races to see if their fairy tale horse ownership story will reach the next level.

“I certainly think he has a chance regardless of all those who say he doesn’t.” Terry said.

“He’s seven years old and he’s only just peaked.”

Mrs Kenna is just thrilled to have a runner in the $2.65 million Caulfield Cup field.

“He has just given us so much enjoyment, so much joy,” Elaine said.

“It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t win. We don’t really care. He’s in the Caulfield Cup, that’s enough.”

Tuscan Fire is a $61 roughie in Caulfield Cup betting markets.
