Patinack Farm’s lightly raced Tremec emerged as a Sydney Cup chance after grinding out a tough win in the Listed $100,000 Randwick City Stakes (2200m) at Warwick Farm today.

Winning jockey Christian Reith made his move on Tremec at the 1000m and let the four year old stride up outside the leader, Now I See, and after being attacked all the way down the straight by Hugh Bowman on Permit, was able to hold on to score a narrow win.

“The further he gets better, he might be a lightweight Sydney Cup chance,” Reith said.

“He needs an unimpeded run when he wants to accelerate and he showed that today. He was able to get rolling from the 700m and he just keeps building, building, building momentum,” Reith said.

Bowman fired in a protest against Tremec moving out on the home turn and bumping Permit as he was moving up outside the leader, but stewards didn’t take long to dismiss the objection.

Permit is starting to show a glimpse of form that saw him go into last year’s Sydney Cup as one of the top fancies before jockey Kerrin McEvoy was forced to pull the stayer up mid race when he went slightly amiss.

The Chris Waller trained stayer will only get better as the distances get longer leading up to the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 27.
