Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie has no hesitations about chasing Group 2 success with raw filly Tints in Saturday’s Champagne Classic (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

Currie tested the waters with the lightly-raced youngster at the Sunshine Coast on April 28 and she more than earned her trip to the winter carnival.

In just the third start of her career the daughter of Tycoon Ruler put away a handy field of juveniles, confirming what her trainer hoped she was capable of.

“We had in the back of our minds these kind of races but we weren’t really sure if were kidding ourselves about how good she was,” Currie said.

“But when we went to the Sunshine Coast she won really well against some good horses.

“She’s a good two-year-old and really professional in everything she does.”

Among those Tints beat at the Sunshine Coast were Robert Heathcote’s well-regarded filly She’s A Dancia and Jason McLachlan’s colt Choisenegger who has form around Magic Millions winner Real Surreal.

A two-time winner from her three career outings, Tints is being aimed down the traditional two-year-old winter path that continues with the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) on May 25 and the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on June 8.

Currie said what Tints has shown already combined with her pedigree are reasons to be confident she will improve as she steps up in distance.

“The 1200m should suit her better than the 1000m and while it’s a Group 2 race her form seems to stack up against the competition,” he said.

“She’s a half-sister to Rob Heathcote’s horse Defenceman who has won over a mile (1600m) so we’re hopeful that she’ll get that sort of distance as a two-year-old.

“Provided she is hitting the line we’ll continue on to the better races.”

Likely rivals Tints will have to overcome on Saturday are Magic Millions Classic fourth placegetter Global Dream and unbeaten Patinack-owned filly Hooked.
