The Thunder may represent Sydney in the Big Bash League but tomorrow at the Gold Coast it’ll be the Victorian’s hoping for a storm.

Alezan Thunder is trained by Mark Kavanagh and on paper looks like one of the better hopes for the $2 million Magic Millions Classic.

That hasn’t been reflected in the betting ring though where she sits at $17, well adrift of the three favourites.

Kavanagh says he can’t understand why his horse is so long in the market, especially given it’s coming off a last start win where she set a new track record.

She worked yesterday morning in a performance described as ‘professional’, much better than her work on Tuesday.

Kavanagh has been given even more motivation to succeed after John O’Shea said earlier in the week that only his horse Hoss Amor and the two favourites were the real contenders and all others were kidding themselves.

“We are here and we’re not kidding” Kavanagh responded.

“She hasn’t done much wrong in her three starts.

“She’s won two Saturday races and in her other start she got lost down the straight.

“She broke the course record last time and arrived here in good order last week.

“She worked well on Tuesday with an older horse out wide on the track but did get a little bit lost. (Yesterday) she handled it much better and was much more professional.”

Adding further pressure to his hopes of success is the fact no Victorian horse has won the Magic Millions since before the turn of the century.

Testa Rossa did it in 1999 with only Winger Charger (1996) and Dancer’s Joy (1990) the other Victorian names on the list.

Kavanagh says his horse is in the form to change that but admits stepping out to the 1200m is a bit of a question given her last run was over just 900m.

“That very well may be a query, but you never know until you go,” he said.
